Friday night had a hell of a hand when this couple were going up against eachother in a hand. He had a full house off the turn, she was sitting on trips. She ended up getting her 4 of a kind off the river. It was crazy.

Some are luckier

I have long known that some people just get better cards than others. If you've ever played euchre, you know that the Bowers (Jacks of trump) are the best cards for you. If you get both bowers in hearts, (JHearts and J diamonds) let's say, that's almost like getting pocket aces in Hold 'Em. I noticed that one girl I played against just seemed to get them way more than anyone else. And it did not matter who dealt, and it was not just occasionally. So, one night, I kept track and she had both bowers 22 times in about an hour. No one else in the game had them over 4 times. And it was continuous.

The same is true in Hold 'Em. You all know someone who is unconsciously lucky in getting cards or outdrawing people.

My wife is one of those extremely lucky people. When we play heads-up at home, it just seems that she gets better starting hands, and a lot more Aces and Kings. It's about 70% of the time, I am guessing.  So it takes a lot of waiting and trapping, etc., to overcome that.

So I decided to keep track of how she does in comparative circumstances. Check this out:

Since we do not play Poker Pub in the summer where we are, we play a lot of Full Tilt on line. We play on 2 different computers and in different games. To keep things relatively equal, this is what happened over the same time span of about 2 1/2 hours.

Pocket Pairs: Mrs. Reddog 16. Me 5. (odds of getting pocket pairs are 1 in 16 hands or 6%. She gets them about every 8 hands.)

Trips: Mrs. Reddog 8. Me 3.

Full Houses: Mrs. Reddog 9. Me 0.

Flushes: Mrs. Reddog 18. Me 3

Straights: Mrs. Reddog 11. Me 2

Quads: Mrs. Reddog 1. Me 0

Pocket Aces: Mrs. Reddog 4. Me 1.

Starting to see a pattern? And this is no exaggeration, and is fairly constant.

Hold 'Em is supposed to be a game of skill and patience, but I'll tell you what, I'd like to have some of that luck.

Do any of you have anyone you know that gets cards like this, including yourself? Just wondering.

sample is too small

2.5 hours is nothing - the sample size is way too small.

I'll stake her if those numbers hold up.

250 hours will do and, she might just need a better poker coach than you Reddog if she catches like that and isn't supporting you with her winning$ already.

I do understand that 2.5 hours is not a huge sample, but I was using that as an example for one stretch of time, and I said it is fairly typical of what happens in general. Some time I will use a longer sampling. I just tried to do a measure of something that SEEMS to be so, and I believe is so.

The point is, I believe that some people do catch better cards than others. I'm sure you all know them. And they don't necessarily win over the long run. Well-timed aggression and patience generally will win over cards. So when I play my wife heads-up on an almost daily basis, I wait the cards out and generally have the chips at the end.

I don't claim to be a great poker coach, but do OK as a player, in general, with continual striving for improvement.

So anyway, I am just looking for examples of players who catch incredible cards or incredible suckouts on a regular basis, just for interesting reading.

Examples: How about AK suited against A 9 unsuited. All in. A9 only needs a 9, right? Didn't get a 9, but J856 on the board and you guessed it, a 7 on the River.

55 against A5. All-in.  A5 only needs an Ace, you say. Didn't get an Ace, or a straight, or a flush. How did A5 win? 7QJQ hits first 4 cards on the board, and a Jack on the river. 5s get counterfeited. Same player, same suckout. Two consecutive tournaments. And she does it on a regular basis.

Yes, suckouts happen all the time, but if you're a 85 to 95% favorite to win before the River card, and get sucked out on by the same few people about 75% of the time or more, that is significant. And you know they are out there.

I know that you will say that A 9 and A 5 are not terrible hands in all-in situations and that those can get lucky. I understand that. But see if this does it for you:

I was not involved in this one, but the suckout person was. Another guy had Aces in the hole and the blinds were $200-$400. He bets $1500. The suckout queen calls. The flop comes J94 rainbow. The guy bets $3000. The lady calls. A 7 comes on the turn. Aces go all in, and gets a call. The River is a 10. The suckout queen has just hit a straight with 8 6 offsuit in her hand and calling large bets and getting 7 10 runner runner. If that isn't enough for for you, nothing is.
